Access free line manager training for SMEs through our DevelopMentor programme, supported by Youth Futures Foundation.

Workwhile’s DevelopMentor programme is expanding across England, with support from Youth Futures Foundation.

It will also be evaluated through a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) – the gold standard of scientific evaluation – generating much-needed evidence on what works to support young apprentices in succeeding in the workplace.

About DevelopMentor

DevelopMentor is a short training programme for line managers of young apprentices (aged 24 or under), designed to develop the skills managers need to help their apprentices thrive. It has been specially developed for line managers and supervisors in busy SMEs. You can access a FREE place for your SME thanks to our funding from Youth Futures Foundation.

What you need to know

  • DevelopMentor is delivered over four 90-minute training sessions, followed by two one-hour 1:1 coaching sessions, all taking place online – with no coursework or assessments
  • Places are available for groups starting on a rolling basis between September 2026 and March 2027.
  • Line managers will develop their skills to support their young apprentices in succeeding at work. Key practical content includes: the role of line manager and its challenges; inclusive line management; understanding motivation and engagement; objective setting; difficult conversations; coaching skills for line managers.

Is my SME eligible to access the training?

  • The programme is open to small or medium-sized employers (defined as having fewer than 250 staff) in England, with an apprentice aged 24 and under - in any sector or profession
  • SMEs will be asked to nominate someone who is line managing or supervising a young apprentice to participate in the programme

Why is it important?

Line managers can make a significant difference to our experience of work, yet few receive the training they need. This is all the more important for those managing young apprentices at the start of their working lives, as part of a generation who we know are finding the transition to work difficult. With over a million young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), it’s vital that we enable managers to help young apprentices not just to stay in work but to thrive and progress.

This RCT will robustly test the extent to which a support programme for line managers can measurably impact apprentice outcomes, generating unique evidence to support improved youth employment policy and practice.
