It’s that time of year again when we find ourselves putting lights on about 4pm, sometimes earlier. The nights are getting colder and we are cranking up that heating to keep warm.

Have you done all you can to reduce your energy bill this winter?

If not don’t worry, there is still time to make some small changes.

Here are 3 practical, and easy,  ways to help be more efficient with your energy spends.

1. Lower your thermostat slightly

Turning your heating down by even 1°C can cut heating bills by around 10%. Most people won’t notice the difference, especially if you use cosy layers or blankets when relaxing.

2. Wash clothes more efficiently

Washing at 30°C instead of 40°C and running full loads uses far less energy. Air-drying clothes instead of using a tumble dryer (when possible) also makes a huge difference.

3. Switch to energy-efficient lighting and appliances

LED bulbs use up to 80% less energy and last much longer. These have come down in price over the years but even if you just change the bulbs in those rooms you use the most it will make a big difference. Also when replacing appliances, check for A-rated or better energy labels, they are cheaper to run over time.

As an aside, I have Solar panels so I make a conscious effort to use appliances, especially the washing machine and my oil heater I have in the lounge, while the panels are generating electricity.
